Cal Smyth has lived in Serbia, Japan, Mexico & Italy. He has met wanted criminals, dealt with visa scams and escaped NATO bombing. His most recent crime novel The Balkan Route is published by Fahrenheit Press, the first in a series of Balkan Noir.
In 2015, he was awarded a Literature Wales Writers’ Research Bursary.
With the aid of a Serbian publisher, Cal interviewed a police inspector in Belgrade. This meeting revealed first-hand information about the Balkan drug route and corruption. Cal was assisted by a linguist with a bullet in her leg who provided insights into the Serbian underworld. His Balkan Noir novels are in development with Series Balkans Association. Cal has an MA in Screenwriting, teaches Creative Writing and Writing Media. He lives in Wales with his son.
